What Is PDF/A and Why Does It Matter?

The Different PDF/A Standards Explained

• PDF/A-1 (ISO 19005-1): The original standard released in 2005, based on PDF 1.4. It comes in two conformance levels: PDF/A-1a (full accessibility with tagged structure) and PDF/A-1b (basic visual reproducibility). Most regulatory bodies that mandate PDF/A accept PDF/A-1b as a minimum requirement.

Limitations to Be Aware Of

PDFs that use heavily non-standard font encodings or that were created by very old software may not fully satisfy every validator's strict conformance checks. Additionally, features that are prohibited in PDF/A — such as encryption, JavaScript, audio/video content, and transparent layers (in PDF/A-1) — are automatically removed or neutralized during conversion.
